Youth Outside’s Outdoor Educators Institute (OEI) is changing lives—and not just those of its participants, but the lives of all those around them.
“I am now challenged to go into work every day with the mindset of inclusion, to understand that one child in my group may need more help and time understanding things than another child. ...One of the most important things OEI has shown me is that as an African American man, I can be my own boss or lead my own organization as a person of color and that just gives me so much hope and inspiration for my career.” –Jaymes Kingsberry, 2017 OEI graduate
Our 2018 Outdoor Educators Institute was a huge success and we need your support to grow the program in 2019!
This past fall, in the Bay Area, 17 young adults challenged themselves in ways they had never expected possible. They paddled through ocean waves in sea kayaks, climbed up rock faces, and backpacked on trails far away from the city. For many, this was their first time participating in this type of activity.
They have also challenged themselves to think deeply about how to create equity, inclusion, and cultural relevancy in the outdoor and environmental fields – so they can embody leadership roles in fostering change.
For the first time ever, we had an all-female and woman-identifying cohort, and we added powerful new programming to explore this intersection of identities and its impact on connecting to the outdoors and nature.
We need your support to enroll more young people in OEI in 2019 to continue to increase the number of outdoor educators from a wider range of racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
